Hooray for Julia Donaldson!
Somewhat late but still in time to shout a loud, ‘Hooray!’ for Julia Donaldson who has recently been named the Waterstone’s Children’s Laureate. The perfect choice for my money, Julia is a master at writing rhymes for children’s books. Her runaway success with books such as the Gruffalo and Room on a Broom are no fluke. She has an uncanny sense for what works for children, using simple rhymes to concoct imaginative and meaningful narratives.
Recognising how much children enjoy repetition there is usual a ‘chorus’ in her books which enlivens them no end. Axel Scheffler adds wonderful touches with his memorable, animation style but those rhymes could bring children joy even without the pictures.
Julia aims to do much to promote rhyming stories in her tenure as Children’s laureate which I am thrilled to hear. She will also look to provide greater support for hearing books for deaf children and to help disabled children in general. Here’s to you, Julia! May the crown sit comfortably on your teeming head.
